| DVD is an optical disc technology that
has been designed to replace the CD-ROM,
VCD and audio compact discs
over the next few years. Using two layers and both
sides a DVD disk can store more than 28 times
more data than a CD which is about equal to a 2 hour movie.
DVD disks can be played on a variety of devices:
- Computer that's equipped with a DVD-ROM drive and
the necessary playback software.
- DVD Video Players that connect to a television
monitor.
- DVD Audio Players
- Hybrid Players
The standard DVD format is
the MPEG-2 file and compression standard. MPEG-2
video can provide up to four times the
resolution of MPEG-1 and can be delivered at up to 30
interlaced frames per second
with two independent fields
per frame. The second field
can be used for subtitles or other bitmap based data such as
karaoke lyrics. DVD
Audio quality is comparable to audio compact discs.
