Movie file types by file extension.
If
you have setup Windows to hide the file extension of known types you will need
to right click on the file and select properties to see the file extension.

RM, RA, RAM -
Real player Networks

- MPEG-1 is a video standard that delivers quality similar to but perhaps
not as good as VHS. This is primary standard used for Video-CD.
- MPEG Audio Layer-3 also known as MP3 is an audio compression technology
that can compress CD-Quality audio to 1/12 the original size with minimal
quality loss. MPEG Audio Layer-1 and MPEG Audio Layer-2 are the prior versions
of this standard.
- MPEG-2 is a high quality video standard is used for DVD discs and Digital
TV broadcasts.
- MPEG-4 is designed to stream multimedia using a wide range of bit rates
from a web or network server but can also be used for local playback.
Audio/Video Interleave
The AVI file created by Microsoft is the primary audio/video format for
Windows platforms and may be compressed with a variety of codecs.
Windows Media
- ASF, Advanced Streaming Format, may contain Video, Audio, Slide
Shows and/or synchronized events.
- WMV seems to be the new replacement for the ASF format.
- WMA, Windows Media Audio, theoretically contains only audio.
Intel Video Technology
These files are encoded using the Indeo codec originally developed by Intel
which has been sold to Ligos..
MOV - Apple QuickTime
Version 1 and 2
are supported by Fx Sound and Magic. Later version are significantly different
and are only supported by Apple although the file extension may be the same.
