Exercises with Text

To complete these exercises you'll need Microsoft WordPad or another word processor capable of editing Rich Text Files.  WordPad should be installed in the Accessories folder of your Program menu.

Download Document.RTF to your My Documents folder then open it with WordPad or your RTF editor.

In recent years most software developers have adapted Windows standard commands and icon art so chances are good that the menu and tool bar of your word processor looks like the image below.

If you move your mouse around on the image of our WordPad document you'll notice that the mouse pointer changes from an arrow to a hand when it hovers over certain areas. Those areas where the mouse pointer becomes a hand are Hot Spots. If you click on a Hot Spot the page will be repositioned to an explanation of the command. You can then move back to here by clicking on the Top link.

Exercise 1 - Select all the text in the document and change the font to Times New Roman then change it back. How?

Exercise 2 - Move the first quotation by Thomas Jefferson to the end of the document. How?

Exercise 3 - Undo the above

Exercise 4 - Change the first Jefferson quotation to match this format:

'"I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." --Thomas Jefferson

Exercise 5 - Change the 2nd Jefferson quote to look like this:

'"The man who loves his country on its own account, and not merely for its trappings of interest or power, can never be divorced from it, can never refuse to come forward when he finds that she is engaged in dangers which he has the means of warding off." --Thomas Jefferson

Move

To move text you can use cut and paste. First select the text by:

  1. Positioning your mouse pointer at the end of the text
  2. Click the left mouse button
  3. While hold down the left mouse button, move the mouse pointer to the line of text above that reads Arial 10 Western.

Now that the text is selected you can either use the Ctrl - X keyboard shortcut or you can use the menu Edit/Cut command.

Now the text that you selected has been removed from the document to the clipboard.

Press and hold Ctrl and then press the End key to go to the end of your document. Position the cursor below the Aristotle quote and paste the text in using Ctrl - V or paste from the edit menu/
